Learning Journey
In Learning Journey we have continued to look at the process of evolution using our timeline to help us. We researched dinosaurs and reflected on our understanding. We also looked at the Cretaceous period and thought about which animals had adapted to survive. Animals that we still have today from this period include small mammals, small lizards, snakes, turtles, amphibians, crocodiles, sharks, fish, insects and birds! Watch the great video about evolution that Henry shared with us – very useful and interesting!
Year 6
In maths this week the learners engaged in a PRIME NUMBER BATTLE across the year group! Each class battled to be the ultimate champions as well as nominate one brave contender to rap the numbers as quickly as possible! We can reveal the results of our winners next week…
In art the learners researched animals that were endangered. They found out the reasons why they were endangered and how many remained in the wild. In order to promote their plight we decided to make paper mache animals to raise awareness. We focused on working cooperatively and considered proportion carefully. We also looked at paint effects including how to create realistic hair paint effects. The results of our hard work really paid off as you can see
Year 5
In Literacy we have written reviews of the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This included looking at the language of a review, recalling specific parts of the film, forming opinions based on how we enjoyed it, comparing it to the novel, and casting a critical eye over the acting & special effects. After writing the first draft of our reviews, we cast that same critical eye over our own work to edit and improve it in the second and third drafts
In maths this week we have continued with data and graphs. Y5 designed surveys to collect data then created bar graphs to represent their findings. We have been focusing on ensuring that the graph has all the correct features and that the scale is most appropriate for the data collected.

Learning Journey
This week in Learning Journey we have been exploring science. We travelled all the way back in time to the Cambrian period through to the Cretaceous Period. We thought about animals and plants that have survived through Evolution due to adaptation. We created classification keys in order to sort sea creatures into different groups.
Year 6
This week we were lucky enough to visit NISC and see the different exhibitions that Grade 5 had worked hard to produce. The exhibitions explored themes of expression and the learners had worked extremely hard to create engaging and informative displays.
Lots of our learners asked interesting questions about the learning process that had taken place. There were projects about how we find art in maths, saying no to drugs and the value of family. It was great to see how these learners had really gone on a journey of exploration. Their projects were completely self-produced so many of the learners shared how it was a challenge to become so self disciplined in managing their tasks.
Year 5
This week in literacy we have enjoyed watching Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and drawing comparisons between the book and the movie. We have looked for differences and similarities that occur throughout, discussing why parts of the book are missing from the film or why certain scenes have changed.
This week in maths we have been making links with our Learning Journey unit Out of Africa and using negative numbers to order time periods from the past. Using a timeline, we have applied our knowledge of number to solve a range of problems that involved this skill.

ENTRY POINT
Milepost 3 took part in a very exciting Entry Point this week. To get excited for our unit we dressed as aliens and humans of the future. 10,000 years in the future! This concept fits in with the theme of evolution and inheritance that we will be exploring throughout the unit. It was great to see the huge effort that people put into their costumes!
For our Knowledge Harvest we answered questions about evolution to discover what we already know. We followed this with Explaining The Theme where we discussed and looked at the range of topics we will be delving into this unit!
Year 5
In maths this week Y5 concluded our topic of 3D objects. We designed and built a variety of 3D net from cubes to hexagonal prisms. We also practised our fine motor skills when drawing 3 dimensional pictures; we used isometric paper to help us and then drew a range of objects. Y5 are looking at graphs and data next.
In literacy we continued with our studies of the novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This week we did in depth character studies and created profiles from the novel. We used a template to structure our thoughts and then searched the book looking for clues and bits to add to the profile.
Year 6
In literacy this week we have continued to write our recounts of Kekediorou and the Witch. We have spent lots of time trying to improve our writing so that we can create a final book version of the story. We are planning to type up our stories and include illustrations as well as a front cover and back blurb. Watch this space for our final versions!
In maths we have continued to work on algebra. We have continued to practise our mental arithmetic. It has been wonderful to talk about the progress we have made since the beginning of the year and how much more confident we feel to draw on a range of strategies to solve mental maths problems.

Learning Journey
This week we have finished our Bake It unit by designing and making our own packaging for bread. We compared and analysed different companies’ bread packaging noting features we liked. Then we designed our own. The understanding we gained during our Going Global unit came in useful because we used lots of persuasive language, memorable logos and slogans.
Year 6
This week Year 6 have been introduced to algebra. This was the first time year 6 have done any algebra so we started by gaining an understanding of how numbers can be used in maths. We then looked at simple formulae and describing linear patterns, before moving onto expressing missing number patterns algebraically. The children worked co operatively to solve this problem in one lesson.
In Literacy we have read the story of Kekediourou and the Witch, a tale from West Africa. We brought the story to life by creating drama role plays of our favourite scenes. We then worked really hard to write our own recounts of the stories. We planned using story maps and then magpied key language from the text that would help to create the West African influence of the story.
Year 5
In maths this week Y5 have been looking at 3-dimensional objects. We have been studying their properties and learning about all the parts that make up a 3D object: Faces, edges, vertices, parallel and perpendicular lines. We created our own definitions of the properties, looked at specific objects to classify their properties, and even had a try at making our own 3D nets.
In literacy Y5 have continued their study of the novel Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. We have introduced it to Mr Phill, who had never read or watched any of the Harry Potter series, through an oral retelling of events so far. We continued to look for evidence of inference and attempted to look at the same event from the perspective of multiple characters

Child Led Conferences
A huge well done to all of our learners who worked so hard to prepare for their Child Led Conferences. Our learners spent lots of time choosing the work that they were most proud of and prepared detailed explanations of why they had selected a certain piece of work.
Learners selected pieces of work that showed particular skills that they have worked hard to develop over the year or that demonstrate the personal goals. Learners used a range of sources to share their learning; videos, photographs, posters and google slides. It was very successful day and a wonderful opportunity for our learners to show off all of their hard work over this past year!
Year 5
This week in Literacy we have been reviewing our Oral Story Telling videos and assessing these against success criteria, to see how effective we were at this skill. We looked for a range of techniques in each other’s videos and decided if we were beginning, developing or mastering within these.
In maths, we have been exploring pattern and solving a range of problems involving different arrangements of shapes. We have also created our own patterns that match a certain criteria.
Year 6
This week in Maths year 6 have been investigating Pi. Not of the apple or cherry kind, but the mathematical constant used in the formula for finding the circumference of a circle using the diameter.
Did you know, although the value of Pi is commonly known as 3.14 , it is actually it is an infinitely long, non-repeating number. It’s an irrational number, which means it can’t be turned into a fraction.

We completed lots of research and found out loads of interesting information about this famous number!
This week in Literacy we continued to work on our twisted fairy tales. Check out Bisruti’s take on a much loved classic! Watch how she brings the story to life using a range of story telling techniques.

In Learning Journey, we have been continuing to think scientifically; we looked at the differences between solids, liquids and gases. Later in the week we carried out experiments and researched carbon dioxide, finding out how it is produced and what it looks like in a liquid. We observed how carbon dioxide can be collected in a balloon by mixing yeast with a warm sugar solution in a bottle.
Year 6
his week in literacy we have used the Story Emporium website to explore Phil the Storyteller’s range of fairy tales. We thought about we could adapt traditional tales with a modern twist. We had ideas such as replacing the hare and tortoise with a Yamaha and a tuk tuk to a Cinderella who rides a drone instead of a carriage to the ball!
In maths we have been thinking about CIRCLES! We practised skills such as drawing a circle using a set of compasses and finding the radius of a circle.
Year 5
In maths we have been learning all about shapes! We began looking at different types of triangles and classifying these by looking at their individual properties. We then moved on to quadrilaterals and identified the properties of each of these.
This week literacy we have taken inspiration from story teller Phil and have been learning how to effectively tell stories orally. We started thinking about what makes a successful story teller and learnt how to capture and maintain an audience, just using our voices. In class, we had loads of fun acting out different characters and using ten second story retelling frames to practise our improvisation skills.

Experimenting with yeast!
This week we have been learning all about yeast. We have found out loads about this living cell and how vital it is in making bread. We designed our own experiment that would help us to work out which conditions yeast thrives best in and then predicted what we thought would happen. The results were quite surprising as the yeast took a lot longer than we thought to react – it was also super smelly! We are going to use these results to carry out a second experiment, changing another variable, and will then monitor what happens…
Year 5
In maths we have continued to work with axis to rotate, translate and reflect a range of patterns and shapes. We have tried to come up with our most challenging designs to really test our partners and created a step by step guide to help us remember what to do.
In literacy Year 5 have been looking at writing from an alternative perspective. We have imagined what it would be like to re-tell the first chapter of our book from Mr or Mrs Dursley’s perspective and thought carefully about how we could build clues and inference in to our own writing. It has been really fun thinking of ways to craft our writing to reveal different personality traits!

An Average Tuesday
woke up from Dudley screaming again, while Vernon was snoozing on the bed, I went to Dudley’s and wrestled him onto the high chair. Thirty minutes later I started gardening, when I caught a glimpse of Vernon peering through the window. He came downstairs, as fast as a snail and kissed me goodbye, while Dudley started having another tantrum, throwing cereal all over the walls. What a troubled child. There were so many stains on the wall now. To put Dudley to sleep, I warmed up some milk and went outside…

woke up on a normal Tuesday. I got dressed, picked up my briefcase and pecked Petunia on the cheek, tried to kiss my lovely son goodbye but missed as I hurried to get in the car. I was driving, when I noticed something peculiar- a cat reading a map. For a second I didn’t realise what I had seen, then I turned around again to see but there was just the Tabby cat standing on the corner, but no map in sight. What was I thinking of? It must have been a trick of the light. I blinked at the cat but it just stared back. As I drove around the corner, up the road, l took a look in the mirror. It was now reading the sign that said Privet Drive- no, looking at the sign; cats can’t read maps or signs. I put the cat out of my mind and thought about a large order of drills that I was hoping to get that very day…

Year 6
In literacy this week we have continued to read Floodland. The story has become even more exciting, but is now drawing to a close. We spent time this week rewriting two chapters of the book from the perspective of another character. It was difficult to imagine what it must have been like for those characters to be there so we practised our drama skills to help us ease into those roles.
In maths we have spent some time revisiting fractions to consolidate our knowledge and understanding. We practiced adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. We then moved onto looking at pie charts which can be very deceiving! We clarified some misconceptions about how important it is to have all of the data in order to accurately read and interpret a pie chart.
Literacy writing examples
have had a terrible day. First, the cats have attacked the horses. An allience?! Zoe and Munchkin left me. They LEFT me. I had to wade through the murky water recently coloured with Spat’s blood. I am currently in a tree. A tree! I know Spat and Munchkin were the only ones to see me and Zoe. I wish had been more secretive. You know, all the food on the boat wasn’t all of my food. I kept with me: three tins of beans, one corn and a bottle of water. I’m not sure how I’ll cook without making it obvious where I am.

Dear diary,
Urgh that sounds so girly. Sounds like something Zoe would say. At this point, whilst I’m writing, I realise all the eels are dead. Looking back into when I stabbed Spat and Munckin ‘escaped’ with Zoe, swimming toward Zoe like a drowning cat. Cats! I just realised. They’re coming. Goodbye. Here they are now.

Entry Point – Bake it!
This week we have been getting really excited about our Entry Point for Bake it! We had to go on a hunt to find all the parts to our recipe and piece them together before we could get baking our delicious scones. It involved loads of cooperation and resilience, following all the different steps of the recipe, but it was great getting to eat what we had created. We are looking forward to better understanding the science that happens in the baking process and conducting some experiments of our own.
Y5 Literacy
We have begun our new class novel: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. We have started to think about how an author uses inference to give us clues about what might happen in the story and to help us gain a clear picture of the characters. We have been hunting for evidence in the text (detective style) to support our character profiles, which we will continue to add to as the story progresses.
Year 6 Literacy
This week we have had a reading focus in Year 6. We have concluded our novel Floodland and have had good fun re-writing chapters from different characters points of view. We have also practised finding inference in pieces of writing and discussing author’s uses of different words and the effects they have on us as readers.
Year 5 Maths
This week we have been attempting some tricky reflections and rotations using a mirror line and axis. We have created our own patterns and had a go at reflecting and rotating these in different ways, using vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. Some of these have been really complicated and required lots of perseverance and careful measuring.
Year 6 Maths
We have been looking at the data handling cycle this week during maths. We have been creating our own pie charts and creating questions for our partners to solve, which involved a lot of higher order thinking! This also allowed us to revise our percentage and fractions skills at the same time. We then moved onto interpreting information from line charts, explored the concept of proportion and answered difficult questions which really stretched our understanding.

MP3 Gone Global
6/4/2017
Learning Journey
We have finished our epic journey around the globe in Going Global. To finish this unit we held a ‘dragons den’ style interview. Learners created inventions, built, packaged, costed, and marketed the inventions to the panel of dragons who asked some pretty tricky questions.
We needed all of our knowledge from the unit to answer the judges questions about target audience, production, ethical and sustainable qualities, marketing distribution.
Y5 Literacy
This week we have been working on different styles of poems. We are starting to get pretty good at choosing interesting words and phrases that have a deeper meaning than first glance. We have continued to use similes and metaphors and are beginning to use personification to add human qualities to everyday objects.
Y6 Literacy
Our focus this week has been on drawing inference from texts. We have studied sections from different stories and answered questions which really made us think carefully about what exactly the author wanted us to think and the techniques the author used to do this.
Y5 Maths
In maths we have started the fun and interesting topic of Roman Numerals! We have learned the basic numbers and some rules as to how to apply them.
Roman Numerals Quiz

Y6 Maths
This week we have been learning about how the use of brackets affects questions.
We started by exploring the question
3 + 5 x 5
and discussed how some learners got an answer of 40 and some got 28. But who was right and why?
We then added brackets so it looked like:
3 + (5×5)
and understood we needed to do the sum inside the brackets first. This made the question:3 + 25 so the answer was 28
By placing the brackets in different places, how many different sums and answers can you find for this sequence?
4 + 5 x 4 – 3
We will be discovering next week why the answer to the original sum should be 28 even if we don’t use brackets!

Visit to Aziza School
Theme for artwork: Connections
(between nature and us, Cambodia and England.)
Last Friday 6R went to visit Aziza school in a building known as the White Building which is near iCAN. Our aim was to collaborate with the learners to make a piece of art. The students we worked with were aged 8-13. We collaborated to create amazing stencils about nature, for example of flowers, snowflakes etc.
To introduce ourselves we did some day openers like stand up, pair up. For the next opener, Ms. Beverly had some pictures of animals and we chose our favourite and played a game like fruit salad which helped us get to know each other better.
After the opener we had to pair up with an Aziza student, and quickly Ms. Becky and Ms. Beverly started to explain to us about the project. Then we started with our nature stencils. Before we got started doing the real stencils, we did some practice rounds by cutting circles, squares and triangles with the craft knife. 6R guided the Aziza students how to use a craft knife and how to be safe with it.
Everyone started by sketching something related to nature and used the craft knife to cut our stencils, while Ms.Beverly got ready with our second piece of art. The second piece of art was sticking pieces of jigsaw puzzles to a sketch of a lotus flower that Ms. Becky prepared for us. We used jigsaw puzzles to show the connectivity of Cambodia and England.
It was a fun time making art with the Aziza students and we are all excited for when the Aziza students come to our school, iCAN, next week.

Year 5 Learning Journey
We concluded history with the making of our ancient home shopping shows; and moved into society this week in our penultimate week of Going Global. We discussed the difference between needs and wants. We listed all of ours and then compared them to children’s from different countries. We looked at the big issues like: Do we, as citizens of Cambodia, have a responsibility to help those in need here?
Year 6 Learning Journey
This week we have begun history by researching what ancient civilizations used to trade with. Once we had enough information, we began to film a “TV home shopping network” for ancient civilisations. Want to know what the ancient Egyptians thought were amazing fashion accessories? Or how much a Viking ling boat would set you back? Then check out our finished videos in next week’s blog!
Year 5 Literacy
In literacy, we continued working with the globalisation theme as we created logos, slogans, and signage for our imaginary clothing brands. We thought of the lettering, the fonts, colours and clever word play like alliteration and onomatopoeia for our slogans. We also returned to poetry this week in Year 5. We looked at different types of poems and the tricks that poets use, such as using similes, metaphors and personification. We read a range of poems and began to structure our own using these techniques to bring them to life. Here’s an example:
This is not a rubber
Pearly white time machine,
Changing the past
Mistake canceller
Removing errors you make
Smooth, blank edges
Shaded, black pencil marks
Shallow, light holes
Shedding its mistaken skin
Drops it microscopic scars
Faded, pale skin
Teleporting through words and sentences
This is not a rubber.
Year 6 Literacy
In literacy we continued working with the globalisation theme as we created logos, slogans, and signage for our imaginary clothing brands. We thought of the lettering, the fonts, colours and clever word play like alliteration and onomatopoeia for our slogans. We then looked at the persuasive language used in advertising of products and came up with our own writing, persuading our audience to buy our products.
Y5 Maths
In maths this week we have been looking at prime, composite, squared, and cubed numbers! Fun fact: There are twenty five prime numbers between 1 and 100! And did you know that 1 is not a prime number? This one even tricked Mr Phill who was adamant that it was until multiple sites we found on google eventually convinced him otherwise. We created who am I clues for numbers using terms prime, composite, squared, and cubed.
Who am I?
I am a composite number between 1 -100
I am a square number
I am also a cube number
The sum of my digits equal 10
Y6 Maths
In maths this week, Year 6 have been looking at finding the mean, mode and median of numbers. We had fun looking at all types of statistics and Mr Tom showed us how football clubs use mean mode and median to assist them in scouting players. We found out that the mean, median and mode are all different ways to find the average. To find the mean just add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are.

Football Frenzy!
Year 5 and 6 teams had another great afternoon at ISPP playing in a friendly tournament against teams from ISPP and CIS. It was fabulous to see such an even number of girls and boys playing from iCAN with great skills and teamwork on show.
Learning Journey
We have concluded the geography section of going global by looking at local, national, international business operating in Phnom Penh. We have begun history and are currently in the middle of a ‘TV home shopping network’ skits for ancient civilisations. Want to know what the ancient Egyptians thought were amazing fashion accessories? Or how much a Viking ling boat would set you back? Then don’t miss these adverts… coming soon!
Year 5 Maths
In maths we finished off the unit on time. This involved more complex word problems involving timetables. We have also started a revision of division; learning about mental division, written division including the bus stop method.
Year 5 Literacy
In literacy we have integrated our writing with the unit Going Global. We edited and redrafted out Big Writes about our imaginary clothing company, ensuring that amazing adjectives and persuasive writing was throughout.
Year 6 Literacy
We have really enjoyed writing our own poems this week building on the skills we have been practising. We have wrote both rhyming and non rhyming poems and had fun with the fact there are less rules in non rhyming poetry and really used our imagination to write poems about boring objects such as a felt tip!
Red, green yellow or blue
Colours of the rainbow just a few
Black grey purple or pink
Bright and dark colours to make you think.
Children colour, adults mark
Highlighters can help you see in the dark.
Light blue is the colour of the sky
Don’t leave felts in the sun, or they die!
Year 6 Maths
In maths this week children have been working on finding the circumference of circles using pi, and exploring faces edges and vertices of 3d shapes. Showing resilient and thinking skills, we worked out that there was a rule that linked faces vertices and edges. Faces + Vertices – edges always = 2!!!! AMAZING!

Learning Journey
In Learning Journey this week we have been looking at geography: how the imports and exports of countries link them together. We touched on the jobs that this creates and also the environmental implications. We found out about our host country, Cambodia, and its imports and exports and mused as to what life would be like if we had to live on what Cambodia produces on its own.
Y5 Maths
The photos show how we have demonstrated our progress with calculations with measurements. We had to write a problem for someone else to solve and then they gave us feedback. We had to think really hard about making sure we could answer the question first!
We have now gone on to learning about time. Specifically converting between 12 hour and 24 hour time, digital and analogue clocks, and how to read timetables. We have been solving real life word problems involving timetables and creating our own problems for others to solve. AS a group we created our own TV schedule
Y5 and 6 Literacy
We continued the geographical focus in literacy by studying, in depth, the imports and exports of two countries: what they produced and where it was going. We then looked at three main ways that companies try to get you to buy their products: quality and luxury, ethical and sustainability, promotions and giveaways. Choosing one of these styles, we mind mapped some amazing vocabulary and set about writing a marketing blurb for our make-believe products from our fictional company in BigWrite.
Y6 Maths
In maths we finished our measurement and geometry unit by designing our own houses. We had a set instructions to follow and discovered that architects need to be able to convert measurements, find area, perimeter and volume of shapes, transform shapes, use co-ordinates and understand scales. We had great fun putting our maths learning into a real life context.

Learning Journey:
Knowledge Harvest, Explaining the Theme, Geography Task 1
We have looked at different characteristics of a good citizen and ordered them into the ones we thought were most important to the least important. In Geography we looked at all of the different products we use everyday: from toothpaste to Toyotas. We researched where they were made and plotted these on our giant class map under the headings: food, technology, household items and clothing. We discovered that there was some correlation as to where certain items came from.
Y5 Maths
We have spent the week converting metric units of measurement: ml to l, g to kg, as well as mm to cm to m to km. Whilst a lot of this was place value revision, the week culminated in a word problem explosion involving students creating word problems for each other that were not only solved by other learners, but also gave the problem setter an opportunity for feedback on how to make it an even better problem. Also well worth a look if you have the time.
Y5 Literacy
In Y5 we have been learning poetry. We have focused on haiku and have spent time looking critically and purposefully at images to create sensational descriptive words and phrases. We have written, edited, and produced haikus about animals in the form of an interactive guessing game display. Well worth the visit if you have time.
Y6 Literary
Year 6 have also been looking at poetry. First we found and performed our favourite poems from a selection of funny poems. Then we had to organise our selected poems into the correct category: narrative, free verse or rhyming couplet. Using the skills we had practised, we then began to write our own poems around the book we are reading this Learning Block: Floodland.
Here’s the opening stanza from one of our Y6 learner’s rhyming couplet poem:
Now she was leaving the city
It seemed such a pity
For she had been there so so long
However she knew she had to stay strong.
Y6 Maths
In maths we have been looking at all things to do with angles. We have used protractors to measure angles in shapes, looking for any links and patterns. Then we used our knowledge of angle facts, from previous learning, to figure out missing angles inside triangles without having to measure.

MP3 have been involved in some fantastic workshops with Mr Phil, discovering the skills and secrets behind the art of oral story telling. Through recreating parts of the story, creating freeze- frames and re-telling stories to each other, they have developed a range of techniques to help them learn and recall a variety of stories from cultures across the world.
Year 5
Year 5 applied many of the detailed descriptions Phil was using to influence their own writing in class. They looked for different ways to introduce interesting adjectives into their own work from the stories that they had heard earlier in the week. The learners also created eye-catching book jackets for one of the tales that they had listened to in Phil’s workshop; creating both the illustrations on the front and the summary on the back. All the Year 5 learners worked feverishly to create a walk through space for the door decorating competition. Using We’re Going on a Bear Hunt as inspiration, they recreated the journey of the story.
Learning Journey
We have started our new unit Going Global with a flurry, in a fast paced trading game between iCAN countries. Learners traded their exports to try to achieve their import goals with neighbouring countries. With Team Leaders devising the strategy, traders scurrying about the trading floor chasing and trading commodities, and bankers keeping the books in the black, it was truly an experience enjoyed by all!
Year 6
In maths this week Year 6 have been looking at translations and rotation of shapes after refreshing our knowledge of co-ordinates. In literacy we have started to look at different forms of poetry and had fun finding how rhyming patterns are used in song lyrics.

EXIT POINTS
ur learners have worked incredibly hard on their Exit Points over the past week. In pairs or groups the learners were asked to choose an aspect of Weather and Climate that they are interested in. They then researched and presented their information to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the chosen topic.
I know facts and information about my chosen topic
I have been practicing researching and presenting skills
I can demonstrate my understanding of my chosen topic by explaining and answering questions
TRIP TO KID CITY
To enhance our learning experience and help us to further research for our Exit Points, we visited Kid City. Congratulations on the huge effort all of our learners have made in creating their enrichment task projects. It is lovely to see all of your hard work and to learn something new about Weather and Climate. We even had a working water cycle! We are excited to see the next set of enrichment tasks!
Maths
Both Years 5 and 6 have taken part in some fantastic treasure hunts this week! These have involved the learners moving from question to question in order to solve the sequence of letters. In Year 6 we were finding the volume of complex and simple cuboids whilst Year 5 were measuring angles and using angle facts and reasoning to find missing angles. This was a great way for us to demonstrate our understanding as well as develop our communication and cooperation skills.
Literacy
his week in Literacy Year 6 have been practising their editing skills. We completed a BIG WRITE that was all about our own disaster story and then edited and improved our writing. We especially focused on developing our stories using dialogue.
Year 5 also completed a BIG WRITE showing 2 sides of an argument. They were answering the question ‘Should iCAN learners be allowed to bring their own snacks to school?’ Our learners focused on backing up opinions with evidence or supporting statements, editing and improving their work and having a discussion/debate using the facts.

Anemometers and Weather Vanes
This week in Milepost 3 we have begun our Technology lessons. This has involved creating an Anemometer and a Weather Vane. Can you remember the purpose of each of these weather instruments?
Maths
In maths this week Year 6 have had lots of fun looking at area and perimeter. We have applied our skills to real life by going to the hall and measuring the area and perimeter of mats that have been positioned together to create irregular polygons.
In year 5 our learners have continued to learn about angles. We have been practising using a protractor which can be quite tricky! We have then calculated missing angles in quadrilaterals and triangles. We then moved onto drawing angles and shapes ourselves.
Literacy
In Literacy year 6 have continued to read Floodland. We have used our drama skills to help us interpret and bring the characters to life. This week we have also been writing our own action story and completed a BIG WRITE.
In Year 5 learners completed a Jigsaw treasure hunt where they used cooperation and resilience to convert paragraphs into third person.
GRATITUDE
We have been thinking a lot about gratitude this week and everything we have to be grateful for. Please click on the link below to go to our Padlet. Here you can add in things that you are grateful. Your posts can remain anonymous. They are a great reminder for us of everything we are lucky to have.
Talk Topic
Our Talk Topic for next week is:
UNDER THE SEA!
What does under the sea mean to you?
What lives under the sea?
We have many different oceans on our planet, can you name them all?
Have you ever been under the sea?

Welcome back!
A very Happy New Year to you and all of your families. We hope that you had a restful break. All of our learners have come back to school full of energy and enthusiasm for new learning. This week in Milepost 3 we have carried out some experiments. These experiments have helped us to develop our understanding of how certain weather extremes come to be. For instance we used food colouring, hot and cold water to show how convection currents work. We practiced our prediction skills, sharing with other learners what we hypothesized would happen when we mixed the hot and cold water together.
Next week as part of our Learning Journey lessons we will be focusing on Technology; creating weather vanes!
Literacy
This week in Year 6 we have begun reading the text ‘Floodland’ by Marcus Sedgwick. The novel introduces Zoe who lives in the city of Norwich. Norwich has become separated from the rest of England due to flooding. As a class we have discussed the impact of Global Warming and this story is Sedgwick’s vision of a future world where extreme weather has massively impacted our planet.
In Year 5 we have thought about the difference between opinion and fact, sharing opinions about specific topics with reasons. It has been very interesting in Year 5 this week because we have our two classes working together. It has been great getting to know one another and making new teams!
Maths
In maths this week Year 6 have been looking at measurements. We spent some time converting across measurements and then solving word problems.
In Year 5 we have been focusing on angles. We created posters all about angles where we had to classify and measure different types of angles.
It would be great if our learners could spend some time at home practising their mental math skills. Below is a reminder for our login details for Interactive Resources.
