Have a lovely holiday!
There it is; the long summer break. And what a great year we have had.
We went on trips to the aquarium, the trampoline park and the cinema. We have toured around highlights in Phnom Penh with a tuktuk and walked around the neighbourhood. We learned about children in other parts of the world, and used Skype to connect with them. We had special visitors in our classes and worked together with other Mileposts. And last but definitely not least; we had our own show filled with Milepost 1 talent!
Our learners have grown so much over the past year, not just in length, but also in their personal goals!
They practised being thinkers, communicators, enquirers and so much more!
We wish our leavers best of luck as they move on to their next big adventure!
As the final day draws to a close, the MP1 Team would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday. We really appreciate all the support and effort you and your children have given over the past year.
For those returning after the holidays, we look forward to hearing all about your adventures.
For those leaving, we hope you have enjoyed your time at iCAN and are ready to embrace new challenges with open arms.
Be brave, take risks and remember: we will miss you!
A huge, heartfelt thank you to Ms. Annemiek; good luck in your next school in Bangkok. You will be hugely missed by the team but especially by all of the learners.
A massive goodbye to Ms. Sophie who is returning to the U.K. to teach in London. The learners will miss you so much. You have been a wonderful part of the team.
Please stay in touch!

MP1’s Twinkling Stars!
One of the highlights this week was the Twinkling Stars Show last Wednesday. The opening act was Mr Snitch, which the learners very much enjoyed. Our hosts were Harper and Ellen, who led us through the whole show. Lots of the Milepost 1 learners showed their talents; we saw comedians, dancers, singers and lots of children playing an instrument! The children were so brave to step up on the stage and show us their skills. What a lovely morning filled with so much talent!
In Year 1 we started with out memory book and thought about the highlights of this year. We also talked about things the children are looking forward to in Year 2 and new things they want to learn! We wrote kindness cards for each other and gave compliments to our classmates.
In Year 2 in maths this week we have been detectives using our maths skills in order to solve a firework thief mystery! In Literacy we have mapped out our modernised tale of Little Red Riding Hood, and used our speaking and listening skills to practise retelling the story. We have worked on developing our expression for the different characters. We ended the week by performing our stories using our shadow puppets.

EXIT POINT
Milepost 1 has been starting with their Exit Points this week. They are making shadow puppets, so that they can experiment with light and dark. Later they will make up their own stories to present; how exciting!
Did you know that you can watch a real shadow puppet show now at the National Library?
The learners also had their transition sessions this week where they found out which classroom they will be next year and who will be their new learning facilitator.
Transition can be a very exciting time, but for some us also a bit unsettling. Please, talk with your child and answer any questions they may have regarding the new school year.
Come and see your learning facilitator if there’s anything that is unclear.
In Year 1 we used story cubes to write sentences using conjunctions; and, but and because. We also played the conjunction game on Seesaw and made sentences with those. Finally, we continued practicing upper case and lower case letters this week as well. In maths we built 3D shapes using popsicle sticks and spoke about its properties. We then explored 3D shapes on our Seesaw app. We also used shape nets to create shapes. Finally, we demonstrated our understanding on a worksheet.
In Year 2 this week in Literacy we have been creating character profiles for characters from Little Red Riding Hood. We have also written our own modernised versions of Little Red Riding Hood! In maths we have been revising odd and even numbers, and have used this knowledge to solve a range of problems. We have been partitioning two digit and 3 digit numbers and recombining, then deciding if the answer is odd or even.

Mental Health Week
This week was Mental Health Week in our school. We have been focusing on body image and thinking positively about the way we look, and the things that our bodies can do.
Earlier on in the year we learned about how to keep our bodies healthy, and ready to learn, and how this makes us happy. We practised saying these affirmations in the mirror!
You can see some ideas from the Milepost 1 learners, about what their amazing bodies can do and how they feel about themselves.
On Wednesday it was World Meditation Day and we did a loving kindness meditation in class. You can hear an example of this below, which you may like to do at home.
We also had a special visitor in Milepost 1 this week. Nanda Gasparini also lives in Phnom Penh and she has just published her book. She came to read her book called ‘We drink milk’ and we could ask her some questions, too! The children took this chance to ask her all about how the book was made, from writing to printing.
In Year 1 we continued our learning of addition and subtraction to 10 and 20 this week. We started to learn writing compound sentences.
In Year 2 we have continued learning about poetry. This week we linked our learning to Mental Health week. We have learned how to write an acrostic poem (of our names) to celebrate all of our qualities. This week we have continued learning about 3D shapes in maths. We have learned to sort shapes according to their properties using Venn diagrams and Carroll diagrams.

Our Family Event has been moved!
EY’s & MP1 Family Event
Saturday 25th May
8.30 – 10.30 a.m.
International Mindedness
Do you remember we had a mystery Skype session with a school in another country? Well, this week, we learnt loads more facts about other countries. The MP1 learners were so curious to find out about people in other parts of the world! We read books about how children in other countries travel to school and we learned about different celebrations of light.
We also received a special voice message, and some photos, from Ms. Lily’s uncle. He studied as a marine biologist in Antarctica for 2.5 years! There is even a lake named after him!
In Year 1 we practised our addition and subtraction using: dominoes, Numicon, and water beads. The children also practised writing the numbers in words and tried their best memorising the number bonds to 10 and to 20.
In literacy we needed to revisit some grammar and punctuation. The children practised putting ? ! and full stops in the right place. We also matched up present, and past tense, verbs. The irregular past tense verbs were especially tricky!
We practised writing upper- and lowercase so we can clearly see the difference between capital letters and the other letters. We also revisited our learning about plurals. We found out some plurals end with -s, or -es and -ies
Finally, we read a lot of comic books and then made our own stories. We were trying to use all of the grammar and punctuation which we had learned about this week.
In Year 2 literacy we have started learning about poetry. First we explored a range of poems linked to light and dark. Next, we highlighted important vocabulary and different features, such as onomatopoeia and rhyming words. Then, we used different sources to help us complete a spider-gram full of interesting vocabulary to describe fireworks. We worked together to create our own fireworks poems. We will publish our poems and display them with our learning about Festivals of Light for International Mindedness.
In maths we’ve been learning the names of 3D objects. We made 3D objects out of nets and have also started to learn the features of different 3D objects.

International Day 2019!
International Day 2019 was fantastic day of fun and lots of learning about countries from around the world. Lots of our Milepost 1 learners came dressed up in their national costumes to take flights from the iCAN International Departure lounge to many different countries. They tried amazing food in our international food court and visited different countries throughout the day.
It was so fantastic to see so many people representing the wonderful international community of iCAN, you really made the day special!.
Welcome back everyone!
We are so happy to have everyone back after our Khmer New Year holiday!
This week we are revisiting some of the learning of our Seeing the Light unit. Some of us wanted to practise making electrical circuits again. While others used a range of sources to find out more facts about the world as part of Geography!
We also practised remembering all the things we know about light sources and sorted materials into: transparent, translucent and opaque.
Child Led Conferences
Wednesday 1 May
Please find your allocated slot on the schedule by each classroom
The children are really looking forward to sharing their learning with you!
In Year 1 we looked at the different operations that we have been learning in Mathematics. We then practised explaining these to our partner. We revisited division and number bonds. In Literacy we practised telling stories. Later we used puppets for the settings, objects and characters. The learners showcased lots of their creativity, which was fantastic!
We also worked very hard on reading tricky words (which you can’t really sound out) but they are words that we come across very often in books and stories. You can listen to some practise below:
In Year 2 maths this week the learners have been exploring fractions through pizza sharing! We have been learning that 1/2 of a pizza is the same as 2/4 of a pizza.
This week in Literacy we have learned to turn our notes into full sentences and worked cooperatively to create a nocturnal animal fact file. We have practised our presentation skills, trying hard to speak in a loud, clear voice. Each team then got an opportunity to teach the rest of the class about their chosen animal.
I have been very resilient when I practised sharing my learning this week.
I am the star of the week, because I was a great role model in being respectful and showing super listening during our circle times.
I have been a great enquirer in geography, sharing my knowledge about the different continents.
Well done everyone in 2S for sharing their learning in their wonderful Bumblebear assembly! Great teamwork during the rehearsals!.

Almost ready for a holiday!
We have almost reached the end of this learning block and what a great week it was filled with loads of learning!
In Milepost 1 we had a very special task to do; we used Skype this week and we had to find out in which country the people were located we were skyping with!
We saw videos about different dances and street food from around the world. Before our Skype session we thought about questions to ask, which could give us clues to find out about there location.
Some examples:
1. Are you in a country in Asia?
2. What festivals do you celebrate?
3. What kind of food do you eat in your country?
4. What time is it in your country?
6. Have you eaten breakfast and lunch?
7. Do you eat noodles everyday?
8. Do you have mountains in your country?
9. Do you have a special dance?
10. What is the name of the river in your town?
11. Is it hot or cold in your place right now?
It was such a great experience to Skype with children in another country!
We found out that people in different places have a lot of similarities with us and learning about the differences makes us very curious to learn more!
In maths in Year 1 we revisited time, as we forgotten how to tell/write the time. Some of us even challenged themselves to tell the time to the quarter hour! If you would like to practise at home:
https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/116/telling_the_time
We also learned about the different time zones and we wrote the details on a boarding passes for International Day.
In literacy we reflected on our Big Write. Lots of us included fabulous information in their non-fiction texts. Some of us had to think again about subheadings for the topics they covered in their texts or forgot to include correct punctuation. Luckily, they Year 1’s were very resilient and used their best reflective thinking skills to improve their writing!
In Year 2 in maths this week we have continued to learn to tell the time. We have worked out the duration of different television programmes by looking closely at a timetable. In literacy we have improved our note-taking skills. We have learned to use bullet points and only write the important information. We have practised gathering information from a range of sources, such as ipads, information texts and powerpoints in order to write facts about nocturnal animals.
I have been a super enquirer in Literacy, learning how to write notes to gather information about nocturnal animals.
I have been very cooperative this week, reporting my team’s ideas.
I am a a brilliant enquirer because I came up with thoughtful questions to ask during our mystery skype session!
Well done to all of 1S, sharing such amazing learning in their assembly this week.

Geography
As we had almost finished our science learning, in this unit, (Seeing the Light) so we moved on to the geography. First we learned some new geographical terms; North Pole, South Pole and equator. Some of us knew the words; The Arctic and Antarctica! We labeled the parts on a globe, then coloured the land and the water on our models.
Next week we will learn more about day and night on Earth.
In Year 1 we have been using our skills of finding information on the Atlas app. We looked up animals that live in the North Pole and South Pole. We learned lots of facts about these places. The children created a non- fiction text in literacy using: a title, subheadings and information in sentences.
In maths we continued exploring ideas of division by using a division board, beads and objects. We also tried to solve some simple word problem cards. You can see one learner showing the divide 4 cars with 2 friends, and how to share 60 cookies in groups of 10 on the iPad.
In Year 2, in Literacy, we have been looking at the features of non fiction texts and we have created our own information posters on owls. We tried to use appropriate headings, pictures and captions. In maths this week we were continuing to learn to tell the time. We practised putting times in order, and drawing hands on clocks. We also learned about different time zones and checked to see what time it was in our home countries.
I have been a thinker while working on division problems in maths.
I thought really hard when I was learning to tell the time and I helped others with their learning too.
I have been a thinker, working hard to learn how to tell the time to 5 minutes.
have learned new geographical terms this week; North Pole, South Pole and equator!

Family Learning Day!
Last Wednesday was such a great day; lots of families visited our classrooms and joined with the learning!
Thank you for making this day a success!
For the last part of our science learning in our unit about dark and light, the children learned about circuits. The children used wire with crocodile clips, light bulbs, batteries and switches. They know now how everything in a circuit should be connected, in order to make a light bulb light up. They showed their understanding by making their circuits more complex, gradually adding more batteries and light bulbs to their circuits.
In Year 1 the children started learning about division through sharing. We used a division board and pebbles to help us to solve division problems. You can see an example of their work above. The children also practised sharing equally when making bracelets and preparing a plate for a meal. Division is very new for our Year 1 learners so we will continue this learning next week.
In literacy we continued learning about nocturnal animals. Have a look at the below, which nocturnal animals can you spot?
In Year 2 we have been developing our grammar skills. We have been practising identifying different types of words and sentences. We used the story of Iggy Peck as a stimulus for problem-solving and worked cooperatively to answer questions relating to the story. In maths this week we have become more familiar with terms such as o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to in order to help us tell the time. We have even made our own clocks to support us!
I have had such a positive attitude towards my learning, being a risk taker and trying new things.
I was a resilient learner when we were building a structure out of spaghetti and blu tac! Even when it kept falling down I didn’t give up!
I have been cooperative in my team this week.
I have been cooperative this week when I helped my friends making an electrical circuits in Science!

MATHS DAY
It was finally here! The day we could finally present and sell our product; those we have been working on for so long!
The children did an absolute brilliant job promoting and selling the different products.
Year 1 has been making key chains with Hama beads. They chose their designs and carefully counted the beads and put them together. We made price tags and posters to make our stall look attractive. Year 2 has been working on pizzas. They had to find out which toppings people prefer in order to make pizza that would sell.
And we were sold out quickly!
The learners also had a chance to buy products made by other classes; especially the slime station of Year 6 was very popular, as well as the fruit pizzas made by Year 4!
It was great to share this afternoon with all the learners from Primary and to use our maths skills in a real life situation.
The learners were so excited, they would really like to make and sell products soon again!
Making posters for our stall
Making price tags
In Literacy Year 1 has been focusing on non-fiction texts about nocturnal animals. We started with some research about these animals and we will continue with this next week.
In Year 2 we have used our story plans to write our own version of the story of Bumblebear. We applied our knowledge of adverbs and worked hard to expand on our plans by including time connectives and descriptive language. We are now becoming more independent at checking our writing and making improvements. We have also worked with our learning facilitator to look at what we have achieved and what our next steps should be.
Come and join us for FAMILY LEARNING DAY!
27th March 2019
There is a sign up sheet by the door of each classroom.
In Learning Journey we looked at shadows this week. We experimented with torches and Lego people. Our goal was to carefully record our observations.
After this we made sundials and kept track of the shadows at different times during the day. They were responsible to help each other in their teams, which they did very well!
Do you know how shadows change? Can you explain why this happens?
I have worked hard on my reading this week through my writing and using punctuation.
I helped out my friends this week, when they found learning tricky.
I was a brilliant sales person during Maths day, speaking politely and working out the change.
was very resillient while making my key chain towards maths day.

Science in Milepost 1
We started learning Science this week, which has been so amazing! The learners used their enquiry skills to experiment with light and dark! They learned the words: transparent, translucent and opaque. They went on a material hunt in the classroom to find objects that were either transparent, translucent or opaque. So much great thinking going on!
MATHS DAY
Please come and visit our Milepost 1 shops next week
Wednesday 20th March
1.15-2.15pm
We have lots of items to sell!
In Year 1 we started preparing for our Maths Day coming next week!
Do you know we will be making lots of products to sell? We have done surveys in school to find out which colours people like and we are making products accordingly. We practised planning for a design and following our plans. We had to do lots of counting and marking tallies, too!
In Literacy we started learning to take notes while watching a video or listening to someone. Notes are usually very short and help us to remember what we’ve just seen or -listened to. The children practised interviewing others and taking notes and also listened to some information, while taking short notes. This will come in handy when we start learning about nocturnal animals next week!
In Year 2 in Maths we have been thinking about which products will sell best for Maths Day. We have been using tally charts, pictograms and blocks graphs to show our results. We have also started to learn about money and change in preparation for Maths Day!
This week in Literacy we have been reading The Bumblebear. We have been learning about adverbs in order to improve some of the sentences in The Bumblebear so that it is more interesting to read!
I have done a great job in planning for my product for Maths Day!
I have been very principled and I did my super best in class!
I am a superstar! I was a resilient learner when improving sentences in The Bumblebear by adding adjectives, verbs and adverbs!
I have been a great thinker, improving simple sentences this week!

Seeing the Light!
Our new unit is called Seeing the Light, in which we will learn all about Light & Dark. To start our unit off right we tasted different foods in the dark and we read a story by candle light. We also found out what we already knew about Light and Dark through a quiz and explored different sources of light!
Follow this link below to do this quiz at home!
Kahoot!
In Year 1 we continued learning about fractions. We are now more familiar with halves and quarters. Some of us even challenged themselves with thirds and fifths! You can see an example of our work on top.
In 1S they practised writing stories following on from Book Week and using tricky words in their writing. 1A has been practising for their assembly; trying to use a microphone and presenting their learning! In Year 1 we also practised being enquirers by asking questions to each other and to the characters we read about in stories; which you can hear below.
In Year 2 we have continued our learning on data handling. We have learned to pose our own questions and collect information in tally charts and block graphs. We have really been developing our skills in interpreting the data we have collected by answering questions about e.g. most popular fruit, and have even generated our own questions to ask each other.
This week in Literacy we have been acting out our own Traction Man stories. We have also been thinking about what a hero means to us and who our heroes are.
I have become and independent learner in Literacy.
I have been a thinker and working very hard with fractions this week!
I was a resilient thinker when collecting data about favourite colours and turning the data into a block graph.
Everyone in 1A has been amazing risk takers and great communicators while sharing their learning in the assembly!
February 27th, 2019
Book Week!
We had a brilliant book week this week to start off our new learning block.
The children practised acting out and telling stories with Mr J. They also helped decorating the doors in a specific book theme.
Have you already seen the story of Traction Man displayed in the corridor by the Year 2 classrooms?
And which stories written by Eric Carle can you see by the Year 1 classrooms?
We also had an amazing Bedtime Stories event last Tuesday!
It has been so lovely listening to the stories read by some Middle Years students!
In class the children practised making up their own stories using props, characters and settings. They also practised being enquirers by asking lots of questions about the story.
Next week we will continue with writing our stories.
We also have some lovely new reading corners in the Milepost 1 classrooms; like reading in a tent or a boat! Some of us even read by torch light!
Full classrooms during Bedtime Stories!
Listen to some of our learners retelling the story of the Very Lone Firefly below:

Rocket experiments!
This week we started our science learning. We did different experiments with balloons. We learned about direction, thrust and force. Have a look at the pictures below, also from last week’s vehicle models. We also tried to inflate balloons using the chemical reaction of baking soda and vinegar, such amazing scientists we have in Milepost 1!
In Year 1 we used our enquiry skills also in literacy. We explored the meaning of new words through different games like Pictionary and Taboo. We also practised sorting words alphabetically and we recorded the meaning our newly learnt science words. Welcome back everyone!
We had a long holiday, but it’s great to see our friends back in school!
This week in our Learning Journey we started with Technology! The children had to design their own vehicle. They had to think about the details, too; which materials to use and what kind of equipment they would need. Some of us even brought materials from home, which is fantastic! Next week we will finish and finish our models, as we are still in the midst of designing and assembling at the moment!
n Year 1 we focussed on learning bossy verbs in instructions. We learned that instructions are very short and mostly start with a bossy verb. We designed games for our friends and gave them instructions. We practised making sandwiches, by following instructions. We worked hard trying to write instructions on a whiteboard. Below you can see some examples.
In maths we practised skipcounting in 2’s. First we got all our shoes in the classroom and noticed counting in 2’s is really fast! We also danced with the two’s. If you want to do this at home, have a look! Can you freeze at every 10th number?
Last school year the Year 1’s made a video about counting in 2’s. You can watch it below!
Lots of the learners got this very quickly, so we have tried to count in 5’s and 10’s, too! Maybe we can even move on to multiplication soon!
In Year 2 we have been bringing our beautiful picture book to life! We have imagined what the characters in the story might be thinking and saying, and have practised writing thought bubbles and speech bubbles from their perspective. We have also consolidated our skills in using a thesaurus and have been busy finding interesting adjectives for each scene in the book.
This week in maths we have been learning about multiplication by linking it to repeated addition and using visuals such as arrays to help our understanding of what multiplication means.
I have been a great enquirer when learning to count in 2’s.
I have been a great enquirer in Literacy, using the thesaurus to find new adjectives.
