Learning in the Early Years

SUMMER BREAK!

6/6/2019

Early Years have had an AMAZING year! It has been an incredible learning  journey. We have shared many wonderful memories together. Well done to all our amazing learners in all year groups, you have been absolutely brilliant in all the curriculum learning areas. You have worked really hard and made fantastic progress! It has been a pleasure to see you grow in confidence and you have become great, independent learners.  All the children in EYS have been incredibly adaptable and showed super cooperation skills. You have shown resilience and you never give up with new learning. All the Learning Facilitators are so proud of who you have become.   Keep it up, you are all stars!

Happy summer holidays and best wishes from
Ms. Anjali, Ms. Helen, Ms. Vijaya, and the lovely EYS LSA team.

Good Luck to all the EYS learners who are leaving iCAN and moving on with their next adventures! We will miss you!

Don’t give up and keep going; remember IT’S OKAY TO MAKE MISTAKES! WE ALWAYS LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES!

We would like to say a huge thank you to Ms. Vijaya for sharing her wisdom and knowledge and contributing massively to Early Years throughout her journey in ICAN.

Sadly she is leaving the iCAN community  this year and moving to  India; she will then later be joining her family in the USA!

We wish you happiness, good health and all the best in all your new adventures!

Learning Journey
Who’s that trip trapping over my bridge? Our fairy tale this week was the Three Billy Goats Gruff. The learners enjoyed our small world play where they built a bridge for the goats and pretended to be the big, mean troll underneath. The learners also thought about different ways for the goats to get across the river, such as: jumping, building their own bridge, putting down large stones and making a boat.

This week RH have been getting ready to say goodbye to some special people by making cards for learners and Learning Facilitators who are leaving iCAN this year.

As part of their transition into Year 1, all the learners worked in their table teams to make a bridge for the goats. Together they planned and designed their bridge, chose the materials and constructed it together.

Maths
Our story this week led us onto positional language: where an object is. We looked at where the bear was in relation to the cup e.g. inside the cup, on the cup, beside the cup, in between the cup and the ball. We linked this back to our story by looking at where the goats go (they go over the bridge and stand on the bridge) and where the troll is in the story (he is under the bridge).

Phonics
All groups revised their letter sounds and tricky words this week. They did so using a variety of games, songs and written activities.
Please note that reading bags will stay in school from next Monday. Reading will still take place next week.

I have been working very resiliently with my numbers and counting 1-20 confidently! Great, keep it up!

Exit point
To end an exciting and action packed Dinosaur topic the reception learners took on the role of paleontologist and went on a dig to iCAN play. They used spades and rakes to look through the sand to find different sized dinosaur bones. It was hard working finding all those bones but by working as a team and showing great perseverance all the bones where found. Next came the tricky part- putting the bones together to make a full dinosaur skeleton. There was lots of discussion about which bones went where, whether this dinosaur was a herbivore or carnivore and whether dinosaurs had neck bones or not. Finally after moving the bones many times the learners made the full T-Rex skeleton. It was hard work being a paleontologist but with cooperation and adaptability the students completed their task.

To end our dinosaur unit the learners looked at what dinosaurs liked to eat- plants or meat. We looked at different dinosaur teeth and tried to decide if it was a herbivore or a carnivore. Sharp teeth were needed to eat meat but short flat teeth were needed to munch on plants. The learners enjoyed working at, and visiting the dino cafe where they ordered for a herbivore or carnivore dinosaur. What a great unit of learning and we hope your little learner will be able to share all their new dinosaur knowledge with you at home.

Literacy
Ms. Niumai’s group have been revising all their high frequency words this week and recapping on the double digraphs ‘or’ and ‘ar’.

Ms. Helen’s and Ms. Vijaya’s group combined this week and recapped all their single letter sounds. After some confusion over v and w they revisited those sounds and segmented some words using either v or w.

Please note that blue reading bags will stay in school over the holidays.

Maths
Doubles, doubles I can add doubles – has been a popular songs in reception this week as we continue to work on our doubling numbers skills. After reading the story – How big were the dinosaurs? the reception learners went to the rooftop court and measured out how long a diplodocus , a stegosaurus and a triceratops was. They discovered that a diplodocus was the longest at 26 meters and a triceratops was the shortest at 9 meters.

I have been showing great cooperation and perseverance in many area’s of my learning. We will miss you.

I have been principled and coming up with creative solutions to solve problems in class. Fantastic ,keep it up!

RECEPTION

Learning Journey
This week the reception learners focused on the three horned Triceratops. They looked at how it protects itself with its horns and frill around its head. Some learners made a large collage while others wrote fact files about the dinosaur. There was great excitement when the learners tried to get the dinosaurs out of the frozen eggs. They learnt that with the help of hammer and salted water they could easily recuse the dinosaurs.

To put into perspective the size of these pre-historic animals we estimated how many of the children’s foot prints could fit into one of the triceratops footprints. Some guessed 9,000 while others guessed just 5. After tracing, cutting and sticking their footprints into the large print they counted that 36 was the actual number.

Junk modeling and dinosaur foot print painting finished off the week.

Reception Minibeasts Exit Point!

To end our wonderful minibeasts topic the learners took a trip to ISPP’s butterfly garden on Monday. They where amazed to see so many butterflies flying around the enclosure, noticing their colour, pattern and symmetrical wings. They even got to see some very hungry caterpillars munching on leaves. As they strolled through the garden they talked about the different stages of the butterfly life cycle and how the butterfly uses its long tongue to drink the juice (nectar) from the flowers. They linked their trip to their knowledge of bees as they passed by some flowers with lots of pollen and commented on how bees use the pollen to make honey. The learners enjoyed using technology , iPad, to document what they saw. It was tricky trying to take pictures of the fast flying butterflies. Before leaving ISPP they again documented their visit and knowledge by drawing what they had seen and the different stages of the butterfly life cycle.

The reception learners really enjoyed our minibeasts topic and have so much knowledge about bees, ladybugs, butterflies and spiders. We hope they share this knowledge with you at home and continue to build on their curiosity about minibeasts.
